Conversation
In its history, this brownfield site has been refused planning for a single dwelling in the borough of Waltham Forest. Not shying away from the challenge, the Studio in partnership with Kit London, drove the conversation by asking questions like how could we turn the constraints of the site into strengths; how we can invoke a grand lifestyle on a small scale; and how can we create diverse domestic layouts in micro spaces for families.
Studio Approach
The proposed design interacts with the surrounding context, taking cues from the curved and arched motifs featured on neighbouring homes. The use of rich brown/red brick and sweeping curved forms of the exterior, soften its impact on the road while cleverly containing private amenity spaces. The Studio had to be strategic yet playful with the design of the home. Through consultation with a light surveyor, the floorplan developed into a dance between mass and void. Creating a non-traditional outline of the home allotted space on the ground floor for a kitchen, living area, dining area, and garden. On the first floor, holding two bedrooms with the master bedroom including an en-suite and terrace.
