Conversation
A charming backland street faced with rear garden fences and draping greenery set the context for The Timber Veil. An unused garage on a tiny 60sqm plot sits at the centre of this street presenting the opportunity for a new lease of life.
Studio Approach
The charm of the existing streetscape sets the tone for the proposed mews style contemporary home. A timber veil wraps around the proposed mass forming a continuation and reinterpretation of the adjacent garden fences. The permeable timber veil cloaks the home in a privacy screen and combined with deep inset windows allows the home to retreat from the street and form a mini backland oasis. This is contrasted with an immediate sense of grandeur that is experienced upon entry into the home through a grand top lit stair spanning the full depth of the home which enjoys views out onto the gardens beyond. The home is viewed as an extension to the mews style street on which it sits, which is reflected in the use of external paving both internally and externally as well as on the intermediary entrance forecourt and south facing courtyard spaces.
